From Book 1: The first Calhoun romance from #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts. When the Calhoun sisters inherited the Towers, their family's crumbling mansion on the coast of Maine, they never imagined the passion and adventure their windfall would bring. At the Calhoun Experimental Forest, a year-old loblolly pine plantation in the South Carolina Piedmont, researchers have sampled soils and trees regularly since forest establishment in

The Calhoun Experimental Forest, a research area of the Southeastern Forest Experiment Station, was established in for work on Piedmont forest, soil, and water problems.
Located in the Sumter National Forest, near Union, South Carolina, the forest was chosen because it represented poorest Piedmont conditions. The hope was that studies at the Calhoun could inform efforts to reforest ruined lands across the Piedmont and the South.
Under Louis Metz, the first director of the experimental forest, and with later guidance from Carol Wells, the Calhoun staff began a program of work aimed at soil improvement.
According to Metz, their goal was “to find the cheapest, quickest, most effective ways of. In the early s, the Calhoun Experimental Forest was closed as a base of scientific operations making way for a new laboratory in Research Triangle Park, NC.
Many papers were written during the Calhoun’s 15 years of existence, papers that document how land-use history creates a complex of environmental forcings that are hard to unwind.

The Biodiversity Heritage Library works collaboratively to make biodiversity literature openly available to the world as part of a global biodiversity community. Three decades of repeated soil sampling from eight permanent plots at the Calhoun Experimental Forest in South Carolina allowed us to estimate the rate of soil acidification, the chemical changes in the soil exchange complex, and the natural and anthropogenic sources of acidity contributing to Cited by: The Calhoun Experimental Forest featured in USFS publication.
30 Mar - The USFS Southern Research Station's CompassLive blog features an article about the history of the Calhoun Experimental Forest, founded in The Calhoun Experimental Forest, located in the Sumter National Forest near Union, South Carolina, was established in for work on serious Piedmont forest, soil, and water problems.
The Calhoun’s initial location was determined to represent the “poorest. They then introduce the system that is the focus of their study, the Calhoun Experimental Forest, a property in South Carolina procured during the regional collapse of unsustainable agricultural.
The 84 sites consist of 76 experimental forests, 4 experimental ranges, and 4 experimental watersheds. In addition to the Forest Service sites, five other experimental areas across the country are identified as “cooperating” experimental areas with formal memoranda of understanding between the regional Forest Service research station and.
This is an excellent book because it tells a compelling and accessible story based on forest ecosystems ecology. There are a few informational errors here and there but overall, this is an engaging telling of a very complex story.
I enjoyed this book and the Reviews: With locations in Decatur and Huntsville, Alabama, Calhoun is the largest of the two-year institutions comprising The Alabama Community College System. Calhoun is an open-admission, community-based, state-supported, coeducational, comprehensive community college dedicated to providing affordable, high-quality and accessible education to individuals in its four-county service area.

About this book. Explores a legacy of soil change in southeastern North America, a region of global ecologic, agricultural, and forestry significance: from the acidic soils of primary hardwood forests that covered the region until aboutthrough the marked transformations affected by long-cultivated cotton, to contemporary soils of rapidly growing and intensively managed pine forests.
Innovative experimental designs, such as the use of paired watersheds to understand the effects of forest management on water quality and quantity, were developed on USDA Forest Service Experimental Forests and Ranges (EFRs).
